I know the struggle, I’ve been there… You try everything, however, no matter what you do, it’s stuck at the same length. Here is a few mistakes that could be holding back your hair growth journey.
Over-Washing Your Hair
We all love that fresh, clean hair feeling, but over-washing can strip your scalp of natural oils essential for hair growth. These oils, called sebum, keep your scalp moisturized and your hair healthy. When you wash too often, your scalp overcompensates by producing even more oil, leading to an oily scalp and dry ends – a combo that’s definitely nor conducive to growth.
Note:
Try washing your hair 2-3 times a week, depending on your hair type. If you have oily hair, use a dry shampoo in between washes to keep it fresh.
Skipping Scalp Care
Your scalp is the foundation of hair growth. If you’re not paying attention to it, you’re missing out. Scalp massages increase blood circulation, which can stimulate hair growth. Using scalp treatments or oils can also help maintain a healthy scalp environment.
Note:
Spend a few minutes each night massaging your scalp with your fingertips. You can also use a scalp brush or massager for better results. Incorporate scalp oils or treatments into your routine once or twice a week.
Tight Hairstyles
Constantly pulling your hair back in tight ponytails or buns can cause breakage and traction alopecia (hair loss caused by tension). The repeated stress on your hair follicles can damage them permanently.
Note:
Opt for looser hairstyles and give your hair a break. When you do tie it back, use soft hair ties that don’t snag. Scrunchies are a great option!
Using the Wrong Hairbrush
Not all brushes are created equal. Using a harsh brush can lead to breakage, especially when your hair is wet and more fragile. Different hair types require different brushes for the best care.
Note:
Invest in a good quality, gentle brush, like a boar bristle brush for distributing natural oils or a detangling brush for wet hair. Always start brushing from the ends and work your way up to avoid pulling and breaking.
Ignoring Trims
Yes, we’re growing out hair, but regular trims (every 8-12 weeks) prevent split ends from traveling up the shaft, causing more breakage. It might seem counterproductive, but trimming actually helps maintain length by keeping your hair healthy.
Note:
Schedule regular trims with your stylist. If you’re trimming at home, use sharp hair shears and cut just the very tip to keep split ends at bay.
Overloading on Heat Styling
We love our curling wands and flat irons, but excessive heat styling can damage hair cuticles. Heat weakens the protein structure of your hair, leading to breakage and slower growth.
Note:
Use heat protectant sprays every time you use heat tools. Try to limit heat styling once or twice a week and embrace heatless styling methods like braids or rollers.
Sleeping on Rough Pillowcases
Cotton pillowcases can cause friction and breakage. The rough texture can also absorb your hair’s natural oils, leaving it dry and prone to breakage.
Note:
Switch to silk or satin pillowcases. They’re much gentler on your hair and help retain moisture. They’re also great for your skin.
Poor Diet
Your hair reflects your health. Lack of essential vitamins and minerals like biotin, zinc, and iron can stunt hair growth. Your hair needs nutrients to grow strong and healthy.
Note:
Eat a balanced diet rich in these nutrients. Foods like eggs, nuts, spinach, and salmon are great for hair health. Consider taking a hair growth supplement, but consult with your doctor first.
Stress
Stress affects everything, including your hair. High-stress levels can lead to hair thinning and loss. Stress affects the hair growth cycle, pushing more hair into the shedding phase.
Note:
Practice stress management techniques like yoga, meditation, or even a daily walk. Find what relaxes you and make it a regular part of your routine.
Skipping Conditioner
Conditioner is crucial for maintaining moisture and elasticity in your hair. It helps to detangle, smooth, and protect your hair from damage.
Note:
Don’t skip the conditioner. Use it every time you shampoo, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. For an extra boost, incorporate a deep conditioning treatment once a week.
Excessive Towel Drying
Rubbing your hair vigorously with a towel can cause damage and breakage. Your hair is most vulnerable when it’s wet, and rough drying can lead to major frizz and split ends.
Note:
Gently squeeze out excess water with a microfiber towel or an old T-Shirt. These are much gentler on your hair and help reduce frizz.
Ignoring Protective Styles
Protective styles like braids and twists can reduce manipulation and breakage. However, leaving them in too long or not maintaining them properly can do more harm than good.
Note:
Use protective styles, but ensure you’re not keeping them in for more than 6-8 weeks. Always moisturize and oil your scalp regularly, even when in protective styles.
Chemical Overload
Frequent coloring, perming, or relaxing can weaken your hair. Chemicals alter the structure of your hair, making it more prone to breakage and slow growth.
Note:
Try to space out chemical treatments and always follow up with deep conditioning. If you color your hair, use products specifically desired for color-treated hair to maintain strength and elasticity.
Inconsistent Haircare Routine
Your hair thrives on consistency. Switching products too often or neglecting your routine can confuse and harm your hair. Stick to a routine that works and give it time to show results.
Note:
Develop a consistent hair care routine tailored to your hair type and needs. Be patient and give products at least a few weeks to start working before making changes.
Using Hot Water
Hot water can strip your hair of essential oils, leading to dryness and breakage. It opens up the hair cuticles too much, which can cause frizz and damage.
Note:
Wash your hair with lukewarm water and finish with a cool rinse to seal the cuticles. This helps lock in moisture and leaves your hair shinier.
